A Runway is Born

1942

The war in the Pacific draws closer to our shores so military airfields are established around the country. An airfield is constructed at Woy Woy for the R.AA.F. by Australian Army engineers and designed to house 8 medium bombers, hidden in bush hideouts in the surrounding back streets. This runway would be a satellite airfield for the Schofields airbase at Quakers Hill, Sydney. In case of invasion, aircraft would be dispersed to this location. The runway ran along what is now Trafalgar Ave between McMasters Road and Oxford Street.
